Turkish Cryptocurrency Boss Sentenced to 11,196 Years for Fraud

In a stunning turn of events, Faruk Fatih Ozer, the once-prominent figure behind the Thodex cryptocurrency exchange, has been sentenced to an astonishing 11,196 years in prison, alongside his siblings Serap and Guven. This monumental verdict comes as a result of their involvement in defrauding investors of substantial sums of money. Here’s a closer look at the dramatic saga that led to this extraordinary sentence.

The tale begins with Thodex, a cryptocurrency exchange founded in 2017 that swiftly rose to become one of Turkey’s largest platforms for virtual currencies. Ozer, at the helm of this financial enterprise, not only gained fame but also ingratiated himself with influential pro-government figures, solidifying his place in the establishment.

However, the meteoric rise of Thodex took a dark turn when the platform suddenly imploded in April 2021. This catastrophic event left investors in turmoil as their assets vanished into thin air, and Ozer himself went into hiding, sparking an international manhunt.

In a dramatic turn of events, Ozer was arrested in Albania and subsequently extradited back to Turkey in June. His return marked the beginning of a highly publicized trial, where he faced charges of money laundering, fraud, and involvement in organized crime. Ozer, defending himself in court, claimed that he would not have acted so recklessly if his intentions were criminal, asserting his capability to lead any institution on Earth.

The Istanbul trial resulted in not only Faruk Fatih Ozer but also his sister Serap and brother Guven being found guilty of the same charges. Remarkably, each of them received the same staggering sentence of 11,196 years in prison. The total number of years reflects multiple crimes committed against 2,027 victims, highlighting the gravity of their actions.

It’s important to note that Turkey has a history of handing down extraordinary prison sentences since the abolition of the death penalty in 2004. Notably, Adnan Oktar, a TV cult preacher, received an 8,658-year sentence in 2022 for fraud and sex crimes, with ten of his followers receiving the same punishment.

Prosecutors had initially sought an even more staggering sentence of 40,562 years in prison for Faruk Fatih Ozer, according to AFP reports.

The Thodex case also sheds light on the use of cryptocurrencies by Turks as a defense against the steep decline in the value of the lira that began more than two years ago. The prosecutor’s indictment estimated total losses to Thodex investors at 356 million liras, which was roughly $43 million at the time of the exchange’s collapse. However, due to rampant inflation and the lira’s plummet on the international markets, that amount has dwindled to about $13 million today.

As the dust settles on this extraordinary legal saga, the Thodex case serves as a stark reminder of the perils and consequences associated with fraudulent activities in the cryptocurrency space.
